Boxed Sets: An Informal Poll

Hi, all. I want to ask readers a few questions. As you probably know, there are dozens of Boxed (Ebook) Sets on the market. Some (like Killer Femmes) include 5 authors, some as many as 12. Most are priced at 99¢ and sell quite well. The reason we authors create these sets is to, hopefully, … Read more

Bookstores, Libraries, and Indie Authors

We hear it all the time. Self-publishing is a business and the author is an entrepreneur. After you finish the book, your job has just begun: cover design, editing, distribution, promotion, pricing, inventory— oh—and a little thing called profit. Over the past five years as I’ve moved from traditional to indie publishing, I’ve discovered what … Read more

I Pushed The Wrong Button: HOA Chaos

This might be called “How To Screw Up a Google Hangout… and then Fix it Afterwards” You see, we were planning a cool event for the Killer Femmes Bundle I’m a part of.  We were going to do a Google Hangout and talk about “The Secrets to Writing a Series.” Four of the five of us … Read more

Killer Femmes — The Glossi

Some of you may remember I created a “Glossi” for Havana Lost.  Well, we did it again, this time for Killer Femmes which is now available on Amazon, Nook, iBooks, and Kobo. Would love you to take a look… it’s a little book about the book. Kind of like the “play within a play” concept … Read more

Who Says Corporations Don’t Listen?

One of the best things to come along in a long time is the result of a corporation taking stock of a situation and making things better. At least for us bloggers. I wager one of the things you’ve done at least once is use a photo for which you really didn’t have the rights. … Read more

Google+ Comes Of Age

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you’re in a warmer place than I am. What a winter! Okay, back to business. Every once in a while, things happen that I think are serendipitous, but in retrospect, I realize they were put in my path for a reason. That happened over the holidays. As everyone knows, Facebook … Read more

PI Georgia Davis Gets A Make-Over

She would cringe to hear me say that, but it’s true: the Georgia Davis books now have new covers. I don’t know about you, but the process of designing a book cover and then seeing the reality is one of the most satisfying parts of indie publishing. And just in time for the holidays, too. … Read more

A Narrator’s-Eye View of Audiobooks

Audiobooks are quickly changing the way we “read.” Yes, I’m a book addict, but there’s just not enough time in the day for me to escape with a great story. So I make time. When I’m in the car, walking the dog, or cleaning the house, I now listen to audiobooks. In fact, audio is … Read more

NEW RULE: No More Binge Publishing!

BooksYou know how Bill Maher has his New Rule shtick? Well, I’m taking a page from his playbook. Many of you aren’t going to like this, but I think it has to be said: STOP publishing all these ebooks. I don’t want to sound negative, but it’s getting nuts out there. Ever since the self-publishing floodgates opened, “the more the merrier” has been the rule of thumb for indie authors. If you’re not making the sales you want, just write a new book and publish it. Add to your series. Start a new one. That’s the way to boost sales. I know people who are publishing five or six books a year! Which is why I call it Binge Publishing. (Btw, I’m talking about new books here, not backlist novels. Will deal with them later.)
